Lieutenant-General Sizakhele William Dyantyi has been appointed as the Western Cape Provincial Police Commissioner.
As allegations of deep-seated corruption and political interference within senior police and criminal justice ranks unravel at the Madlanga Commission, four new provincial police commissioners have taken office and are expected to strengthen detective and crime intelligence capabilities within SAPS.
Lieutenant General Sizakhele William Dyantyi (Western Cape), Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams (North West), Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers (Limpopo) and Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise (Mpumalanga) assumed their five-year terms of office as provincial police commissioners on Sunday.
Making the announcement Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, said confidence in their ability to enhance accountability, while working closely with communities and stakeholders to rebuild and maintain public confidence in the SAPS.
Evidence presented to the Madlanga Commission heavily criticised ineffective disclosure regimes, slow re-vetting processes, and questionable high-level appointments, heightening pressure on SAPS to install credible leadership.
