Police in western Greece have arrested a man accused of stealing water on a large scale from a fire hydrant in place for firefighters to draw water in case of emergency.

A police statement Sunday said the Greek suspect was caught following a complaint from the local Fire Service in the vicinity of the town of Preveza.

It said he was accused of driving up to the hydrant in his pickup truck and using it to fill a large portable plastic tank in the back of the vehicle. The suspect faced charges of water theft.

Dozens of wildfires break out all over Greece at this time of year amid strong winds that spread flames and tinder-dry conditions in forests and countryside after weeks of drought and high summer temperatures.

Three firefighters died trying to contain wildfires last week on the southern island of Crete and in the southern mainland.
