The Romanian government and state-owned nuclear operator Nuclearelectrica have been slowly pushing forward plans to deploy a small modular reactor (SMR) plant from US-based vendor NuScale’s at the Doicesti site since 2021. Doubts around Romania’s choice of supplier grew after the collapse of NuScale’s first-of-a-kind (FOAK) US project and increasing cost estimates for the Doicesti project, which would include six 77 megawatt SMRs. Earlier this month, the Romanian Ministry of Energy — which is Nuclearelectrica’s majority shareholder — doubled down on NuScale and rejected Nuclearelectrica’s push to reevaluate its choice of supplier. But the project isn’t out of the woods yet. This week, the Prime Minister's Control Body, which monitors the activities of ministries and public services, recommended revisiting the foundations of the Doicesti project.
