Arsenal has agreed to pay €90 million to Newcastle United for Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, securing one of the Premier League’s most coveted players in a deal that also underscores the growing financial entanglement between top-flight football and the crypto industry.
The fee more than doubles what Newcastle originally paid to sign Guimaraes from Lyon in January 2022, when the club shelled out approximately £41.6 million.
The deal and its financial layers
Guimaraes has reportedly agreed to personal terms on a five-year contract at the Emirates. He departs Newcastle with his current deal there running through June 2028, with an option for an additional year, meaning the Magpies weren’t exactly under pressure to sell.
That €90 million price tag triggers a sell-on clause held by Lyon, Guimaraes’s former club. The French side is entitled to a €6 million payment because the transfer fee exceeds the €80 million threshold written into their original agreement with Newcastle.
