Bruno Guimarães, Newcastle United’s captain and midfield engine, has told manager Eddie Howe he wants to join Arsenal. Howe’s response has been the managerial equivalent of a shrug: he’s “uncertain” whether the 28-year-old Brazilian international will actually leave.
Arsenal is reportedly preparing a formal bid valued at £70 million for the midfielder.
The transfer standoff
Newcastle has no intention of selling. The club has previously rejected speculation around bids in the £50-60 million range, signaling that their valuation sits comfortably above Arsenal’s opening position. As of July 23, 2026, no official offer has landed on Newcastle’s desk.
Guimarães joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022 and has since become the heartbeat of the squad, eventually earning the captain’s armband.
