A Russian intelligence agent who attempted to recruit Ukrainian border guards in the Volyn region has been sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison.
According to Ukrinform, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported the verdict.
Based on the evidence gathered by officers from the Internal Security Department of the 6th Border Guard Detachment under the State Border Guard Service's Western Directorate, the court found a 49-year-old native of the Luhansk region guilty of high treason. The man, a former State Border Guard Service serviceman, defected to Russia after abandoning his military service and went on to carry out assignments for Russian intelligence agencies.
Investigators established that he had attempted to build an agent network among Ukrainian border guards.
In particular, he contacted Ukrainian servicemen, including personnel from the Volyn Border Guard Detachment, seeking to persuade them to cooperate with Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) and involve them in intelligence and sabotage activities.
