The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced on Wednesday that it successfully struck the Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez oil refinery, one of Russia’s largest, located more than 1,500 km (930 miles) from Ukraine.The special operation was carried out as part of tasks set by President Volodymyr Zelensky to reduce the military and economic potential of the aggressor state, the SBU said.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official.Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez is one of Russia’s largest oil refineries, with a capacity of nearly 13 million tons per year. The facility supplies fuel to both Russia’s civilian sector and their military.A fire broke out at the refinery following a drone strike. According to preliminary information, the fire is burning at a primary oil processing unit – one of the key technological components of the facility.Strategic significanceThe SBU said strikes on such refineries have strategic significance, as they produce fuel for military equipment, aviation, and logistics of the Russian occupation forces.The oil refining industry also remains one of the main sources of revenue for Russia’s budget, which finances the war against Ukraine. On May 7, Ukraine also struck Russian oil refineries in Perm.Russian officials acknowledged attacks on industrial sites, while local media confirmed the oil refineries were hit. Ukrainian forces later claimed responsibility for the attack.Perm is located in the Ural Mountains, the range separating Europe and Asia within Russia. Its distance from Ukraine makes the strike one of Kyiv’s rarer long-range attacks deep inside Russian territory.
