The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) identified irregularities involving €2.1 billion in European Union funds during 2025, according to a new report published by the European Commission.
The report recorded more than 13,000 cases of irregularities affecting the EU budget over the course of the year. Of these, 986 cases were classified as suspected fraud, involving an estimated €274.3 million.
Higher financial impact despite fewer cases
While the overall number of reported irregularities fell by 7.6% compared with 2024, the total financial value of the affected funds rose by 12.8%, indicating that individual cases involved increasingly larger sums.
The Commission also noted that, over the past decade, more than 96% of improperly used EU funds have been recovered, while authorities prevented the unjustified expenditure of more than €658 million.
