MANILA, Philippines — Rights group Karapatan on Tuesday called for the release of the individuals apprehended during a rally ahead of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s fifth State of the Nation Address, emphasizing that the arrests were “illegal” and “warrantless.”

A total of 51 individuals were taken into police custody for alleged violations during a protest along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, near Batasang Pambansa complex where Marcos held his Sona. According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), alleged offenses included vandalism, obstruction of justice, malicious mischief, resistance, and disobedience.

With this, Karapatan condemned the arrest of the individuals, including 12 minors. The 12 of them were released from custody after the Department of Social Welfare and Development confirmed they were minors.
