Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro — An alleged rebel and an American arrested by security forces in Laguna’s Cabuyao City on Thursday (July 30) are activists, according to the human rights group Karapatan in the Southern Tagalog region.
The group and called for an independent investigation into alleged human rights and international humanitarian law violations committed against Binay Serrano and American citizen Christina Pasion.
In a statement in Filipino, Karapatan Southern Tagalog asserted that the two were tied to the New People’s Army (NPA) “without basis,” after members of the Philippine Army’s 68th Infantry Battalion, together with the Philippine National Police (PNP), arrested them at 6 a.m. in Barangay San Isidro. The military says Serrano was the subject of a court-issued arrest warrant for a murder charge but has not revealed any mote details about this case.
