Motorists travelling through parts of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and routes leading to Lesotho have been urged to delay non-essential travel as snow, icy roads and freezing temperatures are expected to create dangerous driving conditions over the next few days.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) warned that the forecast snowfall and icy conditions could make mountain passes, high-altitude roads and major transport corridors particularly hazardous.
“The anticipated weather conditions are expected to create hazardous driving conditions, particularly on mountain passes, high-altitude routes and major transport corridors,” the RTMC said.
The corporation advised motorists to avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas and remain alert for possible road closures, poor visibility and slippery road surfaces.
The warning comes as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecast a week of typical winter conditions, with a cold front moving across the country before being followed by a ridging high-pressure system that will bring moisture to the southern and south-eastern coastline.
