Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, held separate telephone conversations on Monday evening, July 27, with Faisal bin Farhan, Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia, and Badr Albusaidi, Foreign Minister of Oman, to discuss the latest regional developments and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRNA news agency reported that the primary focus of these consultations was “advancing diplomatic efforts to establish regional stability and address insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz.” Further details regarding the outcomes of these discussions were not made public.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported on Tuesday, July 28, citing a knowledgeable Gulf source, that Oman had presented a proposal to the Islamic Republic to establish a joint regional mechanism for managing the Strait of Hormuz. Under this proposal, ships would voluntarily pay fees for navigation services, environmental protection, and search-and-rescue operations, with the waterway managed on a joint basis.
According to the source, the plan is backed by regional nations and would prevent Iran from exercising exclusive control over the Strait of Hormuz. The model is inspired by the management framework used for the Strait of Malacca between Malaysia and Indonesia.
