Maintaining an identity outside of motherhood is not selfish. It is an act of remembering that a woman’s worth is not measured only by how much she gives, sacrifices, or carries, says the writer.
MOTHERHOOD is one of the most meaningful and transformative experiences a woman can have. It brings love unlike anything else, creates deep connection, invites growth, and teaches responsibility in ways few roles ever can. Becoming a mother changes a woman’s life but it should never require her to lose herself in the process.
For generations, women have been encouraged to define themselves through caregiving. Mothers are often asked about their children before they are asked about themselves. Conversations revolve around school schedules, family routines, household responsibilities, and what everyone else needs. Slowly and often unintentionally, the message forms - your identity now exists in service of others.
But women are whole long before they become mothers. Motherhood adds to who a woman is. It should not replace who she is.
Before children, there were dreams, passions, friendships, ambitions, interests, values, and parts of self that mattered. Those parts do not become less important once children arrive. They still deserve space to grow.
