Some of the biggest names in tech just told Washington to pump the brakes. Twenty-five firms, including Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta, signed an open letter on July 24 urging the US government not to impose premature restrictions on open-weight AI models developed by Chinese companies.
The Kimi K3 wake-up call
The catalyst here has a name: Kimi K3. Released around July 17 by Moonshot AI, the model matched or exceeded prominent US models from OpenAI and Anthropic on coding benchmarks.
Kimi K3 is priced approximately 40% lower than comparable American offerings.
DeepSeek and Alibaba’s Qwen have also carved out significant footholds in the open-weight AI space. Martin Casado of Andreessen Horowitz offered a data point that captures the scale of this shift. Approximately 80% of startup pitches incorporating open-source AI stacks now utilize Chinese open models.
