ITV The Dark is over and the Scottish Highland serial killer was finally unmasked.Hayley Anderson Screen Time TV Reporter22:10, 27 Jul 2026The Dark teaser trailer for ITV thrillerITV The Dark could be back for more with the finale hinting that DI Monica Kennedy’s story isn’t quite over yet.‌Serial killer drama The Dark has had ITV viewers hooked for the past few weeks as bodies of young have been disturbingly discovered across the Scottish Highlands.‌DI Monica Kennedy (played by Laura Donnelly) has been desperately trying to find out the truth as more attempted murders leave a community living in fear.‌But the six-part series came to a head tonight, Monday, July 27, when Monica finally uncovered the horrific truth on who was really behind it all.Who is the killer in The Dark?It is revealed in ITV's The Dark’s season finale that school headteacher Kyle Ward (Brian Ferguson) is the serial killer everyone has been hunting.‌He had murdered both Jason Morgan and Rob Wright, and was also responsible for several other attempted murders.In a heated confrontation with Monica, Kyle explains that he felt “liberated” after the death of his wife, finding his “true self” and his real purpose in this world.Kyle believed that he needed to find vulnerable young men who had a “tragic lack of vision” and give them an opportunity to “do better in the next life” by killing them.‌He would groom his victims first, speaking to them via burner phones, which were handed out by Jason’s brother Nichol (Nicholas Nunn), who had been manipulated after his mum’s partner kicked him out.And when Kyle believed it was the right time, he would poison his victims and leave their bodies in the Highlands.He would also give them a black onyx stone, which he believed would ensure a safe journey into the next world.‌Kyle had intentions to kill Monica as well, but she was able to trick him into consuming the poison himself, leading to his fatal downfall.But The Dark wasn’t quite over yet, as she opened up a card addressed to her daughter Lucy from her own father.‌As fans already know, though, Monica’s dad is the leader of the Burning Light cult, which she had spent years trying to get away from.The card simply reads: “My darling daughter, it is time to let the light in”, leaving Monica and fans alike worried that the cult is now after Lucy.As of yet, there has been no word on whether a second season of The Dark will come to ITV, but this cliffhanger suggests there could be more to come.Article continues belowAdditionally, The Dark is based on the first book in GR Halliday’s trilogy, From the Shadows, which follows Monica’s story.So there is plenty more scope to bring The Dark back for more with actress Donnelly remarking: "This story to do with the cult is just one element of that for her [Monica], and we get to explore that somewhat in the first season, and yet there's still so much more to explore as well."The Dark is available to watch on ITVX.
