EXCLUSIVE: The Dark is coming to an end tonight, with viewers eagerly anticipating the killer's reveal14:18, 27 Jul 2026ITV's thrilling new serial killer drama, The Dark, is set to air its series finale.‌The six-part crime drama, which has been adapted from GR Halliday's novel From the Shadows, has been delighting viewers this month. The series centres around an investigation into a serial killer in the Scottish wilderness.‌At the start of the series, detective Monica Kennedy (played by Laura Donnelly) began an investigation after the body of a young man was found eerily staged in the idyllic Scottish wilderness. She soon worried that it could be the beginning of a terrifying campaign that could strike the heart of a rural community.‌The official synopsis continues: "As paranoia rises, suspicions and secrets are forced into the light, and the locals start to realise that there is a serial killer hidden amongst them."With her experience of dealing with the darkest of humanity, Monica Kennedy quickly becomes entangled in a heightened game of cat and mouse with a cunning killer.‌"Only she can stop this monster before he claims any more victims. But when her own history creeps up on her, she begins to lose trust in her own judgement. Will it be her own actions that are the biggest risk to herself and her family?"Monica's search for the killer will come to an end tonight (Monday, July 27), with viewers eagerly anticipating the big reveal. The series has yet to be renewed by ITV, but lead actress Laura Donnelly previously addressed the possibility of a return for her character.‌Speaking exclusively to the Mirror ahead of the drama's premiere, Laura opened up about Monica's backstory, which she feels could be explored beyond the season finale."What I really loved when I read the first script was how gently it held that actually," she said."Rather than going in strong [like], 'Oh, we've got this big backstory coming', you know, it was just very much hinted at, and I love that it really takes its time in unveiling itself."‌Laura went on: "Monica's whole backstory, the way it has shaped who she is, there are still, even as we finish season one, there are still tonnes of question marks about that, and a long, long way to explore."I really like how Matt [Hartley], our writer, chose to pace that, because I think sometimes when you watch, it happens particularly with detective shows, is that the writers often seem very keen to make it really clear that this person has so much else going on in the background, and we find out all about it and we get the explanation of who they are very quickly. And that's not how you get to know people in real life."‌Mark Rowley, who plays Monica's detective colleague DC Conor Crawford, added: "It's nice just to prolong that, to keep the audience hooked in for longer to be like, 'Okay, what's really going on here?'"It's fascinating, right? Because I don't know any of the other detective [shows] that [have] explored a character like that. So, to have someone so strong and then have such a held back vulnerability that you don't know much about. You're like, 'Come on, season... whatever season, let me [see]. Show it!'"Laura concluded by saying that it "could take a few seasons to work through", teasing the possible return of the "properly scary" series.Article continues belowThe Dark is available to stream on ITVX
