ITV viewers finally discovered who the serial killer was in dramatic crime thriller, The Dark.22:14, 27 Jul 2026Tensions were at an all-time high as ITV's The Dark came to a dramatic conclusion.Over the past few weeks, viewers have seen DI Monica Kennedy (Laura Donnelly) try to track down who has been the person behind the harrowing deaths in the Scottish highlands. So far, Monica and DC Conor Crawford (Mark Rowley) have been working to establish a link between the deaths as they've learned the person wears a mask and paralyses his victims. While suspicions on who it could be shifted between characters in each episode, all was unveiled on Monday night's episode (July 27).As Monica was leaving with her young daughter, she got a call from Kyle Ward (Brian Ferguson), who explained the killer was social worker Michael Bach (Tunji Kasim), and he had attacked him before fleeing with his teenage daughter Tammy (Emily Mac). When Monica got there she discovered it had all been a ruse and Kyle was in fact the person who was the killer all along, with a twisted plan to kill his own daughter and blame it on Michael. As the DS shared a drink with Kyle, with the paralysis kicking in, the headmaster confessed to everything, explaining that it all stemmed from the death of his wife.Sharing that he had 'truly looked within', it allowed him to embrace his 'true self' and hide his twisted ways while posing as a devoted dad and headteacher. Taking advantage of young men who had a 'tragic lack of vision', he believed he was giving them an opportunity to do better in the next life. However, in a twist, Monica had switched the mugs, and it was Kyle who found himself poisoned as he slowly started to die. Luckily, her partner DS Conor managed to save Tammy and Michael in time.People were quick to comment on the ending on social media, with many less than impressed. One person said: "Well that was obvious. The teacher was looking dodgy from the start. How she missed that. Probably because it’s so bloomin’ dark you can’t see what’s going on!" Another reeled: "So predictable. So s**t."Someone else wrote: "This has annoyed me because he is so small and he looks nothing like the killer." As another reeled: "Predictable but still enjoyable."However, as the series came to an end, it teased that there could be more on the way as Monica got a letter which was addressed to her young daughter. It was from her child's father, who is the leader of the Burning Light cult. It read: "My darling daughter, it is time to let the light in."While Monica's past has been referenced throughout the series, it looks as though it could be explored more if it gets another season.Article continues belowThe Dark is available to watch on ITVX.
