Authorities have raided a free camping site in the southern Peloponnese region and arrested nearly 20 people for alleged offenses including illegal camping and drugs possession.
A police statement Monday said the 18 suspects are aged 22-71. They were taken into custody during a raid Saturday at the Elaia beach, north of the town of Kyparissia in the southwestern Peloponnese.
The statement said officers raiding tents in the pine forest fringing the long, sand beach, confiscated tiny quantities of marijuana, a total of seven pills for unspecified ailments for which no medical prescription could be shown and two walkie talkies.
It added that fines were also issued for nine unspecified traffic violations.
Elaia is a nesting site for sea turtles.
