John Tafi has won Samoa's first medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, taking silver in the men's 71kg weightlifting competition in Glasgow.
Tafi finished with a combined total of 314kg, lifting 142kg in the snatch and 172kg in the clean and jerk.
Nigeria's Edidiong Umoafia won the gold medal with a Games record total of 319kg, recording 147kg in the snatch and 172kg in the clean and jerk.
Nauru's Ezekiel Moses claimed bronze with a total of 310kg after lifting 140kg in the snatch and 170kg in the clean and jerk.
Tafi was in medal contention throughout the competition and matched Umoafia's best clean and jerk lift of 172kg. The gold medal was ultimately decided in the snatch, where the Nigerian lifted 5kg more than the Samoan.
