An excerpt from Women: South Africans of Indian Origin by Dr Devi Moodley Rajab following the death of Shanthi Naidoo Tweedie on Friday at age 91.

Shanthie Naidoo Tweedie passed away peacefully this week and with her goes the end of an era of great political stalwarts.

I interviewed her some years ago for my book on South African Indian Women from Indenture to Democracy and this piece recalls our meeting in Johannesburg when she came bearing a paper bag of news clippings of her life in the struggle.

A humble beautiful graceful woman with strength of iron. I left in awe and inspired by our meeting.
