Shanthie Naidoo Tweedie, a towering heroine of the South African liberation struggle, died on Thursday.
The 1860 Heritage Centre and the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation have paid tribute to Shanthie Naidoo Tweedie, a towering heroine of the South African liberation struggle, who died on Thursday. She was 91.
In a statement, the heritage centre said Naidoo was a heroine who walked with us.
"We honour a freedom fighter for her unwavering courage, profound selflessness, and the historic pursuit of human rights and social justice. Shanthie Naidoo Tweedie, like Nelson Mandela, showed us that true leaders fight for equality, conquer prejudice, and restore dignity to the oppressed. She was placed in solitary confinement for her political activism along with Winnie Mandela.
"With those seven other women, she was held and tortured in Pretoria Central Prison for more than a year. Shanthie Naidoo refusal to testify in the ‘Trial of 22’ in 1969, and her brutal detention is the embodiment of activism that will forever be remembered. Her courageous fight for our democracy, even after their release, will forever be remembered," said Selvan Naidoo, the Director of the 1860 Heritage Centre.
