Power utility Eskom and nuclear safety authorities have moved to calm public concerns following reports of brief airborne radioactivity events during routine maintenance at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.
Official statements from Eskom and the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) confirm that no radiation leak occurred into the surrounding environment, and the events posed no threat to power station personnel, neighbouring communities, or environmental safety.
The incidents took place during a scheduled maintenance outage at Koeberg Unit 2, which has been offline since April 2026 for routine inspections and steam generator maintenance, and remains on track to return to service in November.
