Eskom has assured the public that no radiation leak occurred during routine maintenance on Unit 2 at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, which has been on a scheduled outage since April 2026.
The power utility confirmed that no iodine tablets were needed for employees, as there was no impact on staff, the public, or the environment.
The incident has been classified as Level 0 (No Safety Significance) on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES), the lowest rating, and Eskom has notified the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) as required.
It stressed that at no stage was radioactive material released beyond the plant's containment structures and there was no risk to surrounding communities or the environment.
