Corporation Commissioner Gaurav Kumar inspecting the newly constructed transfer station at Kochadai in Madurai on Saturday.

There is good news for the residents in the city from Madurai Corporation.Soon, the garbage collected from as many as eight locations in the southern side of the city namely (Kochadai, Mahaboobpalayam, Fatima Nagar, Ellis Nagar, Ponmeni, Veeratipathu, Jaya Nagar and Periyar bus stand) would be compressed at a modern facility coming up in Kochadai and sent to Vellaikal dump yard in a single truck. This major step not only saves fuel, but also helps keep the eco-system free from getting polluted.Corporation Commissioner Gaurav Kumar on Saturday visited the construction work at the Kochadai transfer station accompanied by senior officials, including Assistant Commissioner, Tamilarasan, Assistant Executive Engineer Mayilerinathan, Health Inspectors Saravanakumar and Ranjani. The officials said that under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 project, the government had sanctioned ₹9.75 crore for establishing a modern transfer station in Kochadai. The contract for construction of the modern facility was awarded to a private firm in May 2025 for building on a 2,470 square metre area.It is said that the transfer station would compress the garbage in such a way that nearly 15 truck loads could be made slim into one truck and despatched to Vellaikal yard.“This will be one of the most modern station with facilities to quickly unload the solid waste, compact it into a capsule and transfer the same to the centralised waster processing facility at Vellaikal,” the officials said. The operational area, weighing platform, security cabin, admin block, container parking with entry-exit gates are ready. Nearly 80 % of the works have been completed physically. Very soon, the station would become functional.A technical engineer said that the static compactor has horizontal compaction machine with tip chart mechanism, which compresses the solid waste. By this, the number of trips done per day from different locations would be significantly reduced. Above all, while transporting the truck can be covered and thus ensure minimum changes in the pollution level, he added. The environment activists welcomed the move of the civic body and hoped the residents supported such measures by disposing the waste in safe methods. By giving wet and dry waste separately, a major work for the conservancy workers would be saved and bulk waste generators should also employ modern techniques in their own campuses which would help improve the eco-system.
