The Greater Chennai Corporation has proposed outsourcing the operation and maintenance of the existing micro compost centre at K.H. Road in Zone 1 for wet waste processing.According to officials, the facility will process wet waste generated within the zone in accordance with standard operating procedures prescribed for decentralised waste management. The project has been planned for a 90-day period. The Chennai Corporation presently operates 143 micro compost centres (MCCs) with a combined designed processing capacity of around 335 metric tonnes per day across the city. Notably, it had closed over 140 MCCs and Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) last year, after complaints of stench from residents.Under the new project, the existing micro compost centre at K.H. Road will be handed over for maintenance and wet waste processing. The GCC will provide wet waste for processing and maintain infrastructure facilities, including sheds, shredding machines, sieving machines, weighing machines, and storage space, officials added. The processing system has been mandated to remain odour-free and environmentally compliant, with controls for dust, noise and other forms of pollution in accordance with Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board norms. The manure generated at the facility will be handed over to the Chennai Corporation. Published - May 15, 2026 07:29 am IST
