A fishing trip that has become an annual tradition for a group of family members and friends from Johannesburg and Durban turned into a terrifying fight for survival after their boat was battered by massive waves off the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.
Businessman Roy Govender, 61, from Johannesburg, was among eight men aboard the chartered fishing vessel at Rocky Bay.
Joining him were his son, Quinton Govender, 24, his brother Deva Govender, 62, and friends Andrew Pida, 49, Jay Naidoo, 72, and Mark Moodley, 64.
Four of the men had travelled from Johannesburg for the annual sardine season fishing trip, while the remaining two were from Durban. There were also two skippers on board.
