A 41-year-old man has died after a fishing boat carrying six people capsized in the surf off Beachwood, Durban North, on Sunday afternoon, while five others, including three children, survived the ordeal.
National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Durban said its duty crew was activated at 5.32pm after reports of a boat capsizing in the surf zone at Beachwood.
The rescue organisation said rescue swimmers responded directly to the scene while additional crews prepared rescue craft for launch.
According to the rescue organisation, three survivors, two teenagers and a child, managed to reach shore with the help of their uncle, who had been skippering the boat.
