A 41-year-old father has died after a fishing boat carrying six people capsized off Beachwood, Durban North, while returning from a fishing trip. Five survivors, including three children, were rescued as police investigate the tragedy.
A 41-year-old man died after a fishing boat carrying six people, three of whom were his children, capsized in the surf zone off Beachwood, Durban North, on Sunday afternoon.
According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), the 22-foot fishing boat had launched earlier that day from the Durban Ski-Boat Club.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said emergency crews were activated at 5.30pm after reports that a boat had overturned in the waves.
He said rescue swimmers responded directly to the scene, while additional rescue crews prepared to launch a rescue craft from the NSRI Durban Station 5 base.
