A man has died and another has been taken to hospital after a boat capsized after a rough wave in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. The two friends were fishing offshore form Bear Island near La Perouse about 10.30am Sunday when a large wave capsized the boat and threw the men into the water. A person on a jet ski was able to get one of the men, aged 74, out of the water and to the shore. There he was treated by paramedics and taken to Prince of Wales Hospital in a stable condition. The other man, who is yet to be identified, was flown out of the water by a Westpac Lifesaver helicopter and taken to a landing on Anzac Parade in La Perouse. Paramedics performed CPR on the man but he was declared dead at the scene. Police believe the men were not wearing life jackets at the time.“(The 74-year-old) was staying afloat by holding onto debris from the boat, and then the divers — civilian recreational divers — went over to assist him,” Detective Inspector Ryan Booker said. He said the divers who helped rescue the 74-year-old was ‘very brave”. “They assisted police during the incident by helping that male to be supported to a nearby jet ski and brought ashore to receive medical attention,” he said. Inspector Booker described the incident as a tragedy.“This is a tragic incident and serves as a reminder to everyone to ensure they wear a life jacket, check the sea and weather conditions before leaving,” he said. The boat was damaged and broken up during the incident. Chris Hibbard, who was fishing at the time, told the Sydney Morning Herald he saw the boat before it was capsized by the large wave. “Those waves truly scared me. They were that fierce. I can’t describe how big they were,” he said. “I have never seen a wave so big down there. You couldn’t see land. They were ginormous.” Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has footage of the boat to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Read related topics:Sydney
