Chelsea FC made a last-minute squad adjustment after Portuguese winger Geovany Quenda sustained an injury, bringing in young English attacking midfielder Omari Kellyman as a replacement.
Quenda, just 19 years old, carries an estimated market value of around €40.1 million. Kellyman, 20, arrived from Aston Villa in the summer of 2024 on a six-year deal valued at roughly €2.2 million.
The transfer market as a speculative asset class
Kellyman’s transfer from Aston Villa, finalized on June 29, 2024, was a low-cost bet on potential. At €2.2 million, Chelsea was essentially buying an option on a 20-year-old attacking midfielder. The catch: Kellyman has been plagued by hamstring problems, including a severe reinjury in March 2025 that knocked him out for the rest of that season.
Quenda’s current injury, a hamstring issue that has him rehabbing at Chelsea’s Cobham training base after undergoing foot surgery, introduces significant uncertainty around his €40.1 million valuation.
