This spring, Elon Musk briefly materialized as a giant Wizard of Oz-style floating head at a conference organized by Israel’s Ministry of Transport and Road Safety to pontificate on the fixtures of techno-oligarch delusion: AI-operated cars, humanoid robots, spacefaring civilizations, etc. However, the world’s richest man eventually left the realm of science fiction for the Bible, touting a new “Jesus-level” technology that his company Neuralink is developing called Blindsight.
In Musk’s own words, Neuralink is a company focused on “creating a cybernetic interface to AI from your brain.” Blindsight—which the company claims will begin human trials later this year, possibly in the United Arab Emirates—is the company’s tentpole “visual prosthesis” technology. According to a government filing, the product aims to use “AI-powered scene understanding to augment the visual scene” for “profoundly blind patients.” In essence, it is a system that will purportedly convert video from mounted eyeglasses into electrical signals (using a machine-mediated process incorporating a to-be-determined array of “computer vision” and “machine learning” methods) in order to stimulate the brain directly via an implant. The idea is that by circumventing the optic nerves entirely, Blindsight—like Jesus himself—will restore vision even to those who may have lost their eyes, irrevocably damaged their optic nerves, or been born blind.
