Professor Markus Lienkamp (born 1967) researches and teaches in the fields of electric mobility, with a focus on developing new vehicle concepts, driver assistance systems through to autonomous driving, as well as mobility data and mobility concepts. He serves as Scientific Director of the Munich School of Engineering, the Science Center for Electromobility and the CREATE project in Singapore.After studying mechanical engineering at TU Darmstadt and Cornell University, Markus Lienkamp earned his doctorate at TU Darmstadt in 1995. He later held several positions at Volkswagen, focusing on commercial vehicle development and electric mobility research, before joining the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in 2009. Since 2010, he has led the Chair of Vehicle Technology and also serves on the board of the VDI Society for Vehicle and Traffic Technology.

The ramp-up of battery-electric trucks depends not only on vehicle technology but also on charging infrastructure, grid connections, depot strategies, energy prices and integration into logistics processes. In this in-depth interview, Professor Markus Lienkamp of the Technical University of Munich discusses the current state of electric heavy-duty transport, the future role of depot and megawatt charging, and the strategic mistakes policymakers, industry and fleet operators should avoid during the market ramp-up. In recent years, the Technical University of Munich has conducted extensive research into electric truck charging, including demonstrating megawatt charging in the NEFTON consortium and bidirectional charging with electric trucks in the SPIRIT-E project.
