Independent plumbers who do work for the eThekwini Municipality has vowed to reject the new working conditions that aim to absorb them under main contractors.
They argue that this will reduce them from being business people to employees and cost them money. They spoke out as tensions between them and the municipality have reached alarming heights.
Yesterday, they protested outside a municipal building, and on Monday, they had closed one of the municipal depots. The dispute is centred on the change in the system for how the plumbers will work going forward.
The Mercury reported on Monday that the city is changing the system following concerns from the Auditor-General South Africa. However, yesterday the city withdrew that comment and said the previous contract was not compliant with the city’s supply chain management policy.
