The eThekwini Augmented Plumbers Panel marched to the Durban City Hall to lay bare several problems it has with the management of eThekwini Water on Monday.
The plumbers, who are sometimes contracted to the city, handed over a memorandum to officials and demanded clarification on two tenders advertised in December 2025 and, most importantly, why they, as contractors, are out of work. The panel represents approximately 1,000 plumbers.
They also expressed dissatisfaction with the management of the Auxiliary Services Department and demanded that certain staff be removed, claiming that some officials have manipulated the municipal systems, are corrupt, and have violated municipal by-laws by using ghost plumbers.
“Officials have blatantly refused to meet with the contractors' committee. They argue that the municipality is not contracted to plumbers; therefore, they have no obligation to explain anything to plumbing contractors on the tender,” the memorandum read.
