FoodForward SA marked Mandela Day with a national packing event across three cities with the goal to pack 200 tonnes of food which should equate to about 2 million meals.
According to its website, FoodForward SA is the largest food redistribution organisation in Africa and recovers quality, within date, surplus food from the consumer goods supply chain and distributes it to a network of beneficiary organisations serving local communities.
The Mandela Day initiative held in honour of the late President Nelson Mandela in his birthday month encourages South Africans to dedicate 67 minutes in service to others.
The packing events were held in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg on Friday, July 17. There was a buzz in the air as The Mercury representatives joined staff from dozens of other organisations at the Durban Exhibition Centre for the food packing event.
