On Wednesday, Jaguar Land Rover previewed the Range Rover GT, the fifth member of its luxury SUV family and the first all-electric Range Rover to be built on the company’s new Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA).The model will initially be sold as a battery-electric vehicle, with a full-hybrid option planned later in its lifecycle. It will be manufactured at JLR’s Halewood plant in the UK alongside internal-combustion and hybrid models.“The Range Rover GT will redefine the grand-touring segment with the ability to deliver beautiful and engaging GT poise, proportions and long-distance refinement while offering capabilities no conventional GT can match,” Martin Limpert, Managing Director, Range Rover, said. He described it as “the most car-like, yet unmistakably capable, Range Rover ever created”.Why the development matters to IndiaThe announcement matters to India because Range Rover is JLR’s flagship luxury franchise and one of the country’s most important high-end SUV nameplates. It competes with the Mercedes-Benz GLS and Mercedes-Maybach GLS, BMW X7 and Bentley Bentayga, while the Range Rover Sport takes on performance SUVs such as the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE.Range Rover’s edge is its combination of premium design, bespoke personalisation and cabin luxury with genuine all-terrain capability. That positions it between a chauffeur-focused luxury vehicle, a high-performance SUV and a rugged off-road product.The GT will extend this proposition into a lower, sleeker and more electric grand-touring format.The announcement follows JLR’s July 16 confirmation that the Range Rover Sport Electric will debut later this year as the brand’s second EV after the larger Range Rover Electric.The Sport Electric will bring battery power to an established performance SUV on JLR’s flexible MLA platform. The GT, by contrast, introduces a new body style and begins Range Rover’s EMA-based electric line-up.Together, the models give JLR two distinct electric propositions around its strongest luxury brand: a performance SUV for buyers seeking speed and versatility, and a lower, more car-like vehicle focused on long-distance comfort and electric performance.A new direction for Range RoverPrototype vehicles are undergoing final global testing, with camouflage highlighting the GT’s sleek silhouette and coupé-like proportions. JLR is developing the model as a lower, more road-focused vehicle rather than adapting an existing SUV into an electric derivative. It is designed around long-distance comfort, quietness, effortless performance and all-terrain capability.The cabin features a single central screen, a driver display replacing the traditional instrument cluster and a concealed air vent running across the dashboard. Woven materials integrate speakers into the interior, while hidden technologies and increased second-row legroom are intended to create a calm, low-noise environment.From one SUV to a global brandRange Rover began in 1970 as a single luxury off-road vehicle and has since evolved into a distinct modern-luxury brand within JLR’s House of Brands. Its current family includes the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar and Evoque. The GT will become its fifth member.The GT will be manufactured at Halewood and will be the first Range Rover built on EMA. The Range Rover Electric and Range Rover Sport Electric will use MLA, which supports petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric powertrains.The two architectures give JLR a two-track strategy. MLA will electrify established large SUVs while preserving propulsion choice, whereas EMA will create electric-led vehicles with the flexibility to add full-hybrid powertrains later. A future Defender model is also planned for EMA.For India, the GT’s eventual arrival would add an electric grand tourer to the luxury family that anchors JLR’s local business. JLR India sold 6,031 vehicles in FY26, with Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Defender accounting for more than 80% of sales. In FY25, sales rose 40% to 6,183 units, while locally manufactured Range Rover and Range Rover Sport sales grew 72% and 42%, respectively.Published on July 23, 2026
