A governance expert and political analysts say that opposition parties are making noise about the wrong things, instead of what is important to ordinary citizens.
“We have a crisis of opposition parties in South Africa; there are many of them, but they are irrelevant and are the mini-me of the ANC and the DA; mini-me policies, and mini-me leaders. They don’t address the issues that ordinary people are struggling with,” Professor William Gumede, a governance expert from Wits University, said.
He warned that politics in South Africa is the easiest way to make money.
“Right now we have companies in politics. They are not interested in fighting for the ordinary citizens; they are fighting for their pockets. This is why you see people passing on the parties to their family members; to the children, as if it is the company.
“As a country, we should not allow people to form political parties as if they were companies, where they employ themselves, their family members, and friends for life, subsidised by the state through the IEC subsidies,” Gumede said.
