Dindigul district Congress organised a protest here on Wednesday demanding that the district administration and the Municipal Corporation reconsider the location chosen for setting up the new Dindigul bus stand.Since the site selected for constructing the new bus stand in Dindigul previously housed leather tanneries, the soil and groundwater in that area were highly saline, the protesters observed.Speaking to reporters, District president Durai Manikandan recalled, “It was announced on behalf of the Dindigul Municipal Corporation that a new Dindigul bus stand would be built at a cost of ₹65 crore.”The Corporation announced that a site had been selected for it. “The selected area is completely hazardous to the environment and is unfit for constructing buildings or for drinking water”, he alleged.“It is not an area suitable for people to live in; it is like a graveyard. This location was selected for the personal gain of a few individuals,” he added. He appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to reconsider this, investigate and choose a different location for raising the bus stand. He warned that if no action was taken, a massive hunger strike protest would be conducted.
