There was uproar at the Dindigul Corporation Council meeting held on Friday over the issue of water shortage and with the Mayor J. Ilamathi and Deputy Mayor S. Rajappa bringing the portrait of former Chief Minister and DMK leader M.K. Stalin to the meeting hall and placing it on the desk.The meeting was presided over by Mayor J. Ilamathi, Deputy Mayor S. Rajappa and Corporation Commissioner M. Senthil Murugan. A pledge was taken by the Councillors on the occasion of World Environment Day.There was a heated debate between the Councillors at the meeting over the drinking water crisis in Dindigul. The Councillors complained that water was being supplied only once in three days. They also complained about the broken pipelines which led to water getting wasted.They said all 48 wards in Dindigul Corporation were facing drinking water issues. They said it should be resolved on a war footing and necessary steps should also be taken to prevent wastage of water.The Corporation Commissioner said Cauvery water scheme and Kamarajar dam were the drinking water sources. Kamarajar dam has almost dried up due to lack of rainfall. Cauvery water was being supplied.However, water supply was disrupted due to pipe bursts at three locations. It will be restored. Drinking water is being sourced from the baby dam. Measures will also be taken to store water in the dam, he said.The Councillors complained about the dumping of waste at the old Corporation Crematorium. They said it must be ensured that all the garbage collection vehicles are operational. The Corporation Commissioner said dumping of waste at the old crematorium will be prevented.
