Farmers from ten villages coming under Sriramapuram town panchayat in Dindigul district staged a protest against contamination of groundwater and damage to crops caused by discharge of waste water from food processing units in the area.The farmers submitted a petition in this regard to the Dindigul Collector. They also carried samples of the waste water. They said waste water discharged from food processing units had damaged the groundwater, agricultural lands, and the overall environment of the area.They said the villagers, from children to elderly persons, were suffering from various ailments. Livestock were also affected, they said, adding that the groundwater for 25 km radius had been completely contaminated.With the groundwater contaminated, the villagers were forced to purchase water for drinking purposes. Most of them were daily wage workers. They had to spend at least half of what they were earning to purchase water for drinking purposes, they said.Despite submitting several petitions to the District Collector and other officials, no action has been taken so far, they complained.
