Farmers associations across Dindigul district have urged that the district be declared drought-hit. Lack of rainfall and waterbodies drying up had affected the agricultural activities in the district, they said.Farmers sought appropriate compensation for the loss suffered by them. At the meetings conducted by farmers associations, resolutions were passed to declare Dindigul a drought hit district. They also urged the authorities to provide appropriate compensation to them.At the Corporation Council meetings and the farmers grievance redress meetings, the water crisis in the district dominated the discussions.At the Corporation Council meeting, several Councillors complained that there was no regular water supply. They demanded that the authorities should ensure uninterrupted water supply at least through the water tankers.At the farmers grievance redress meeting, the farmers said they suffered huge losses due to drought and urged the authorities to waive crop loans. They also highlighted the drinking water crisis in the district.Residents of several areas in the district have been continuously staging protests in their areas and in front of the Dindigul Collectorate urging the authorities to resolve the issue. They have submitted their petitions to the Dindigul Collector in this regard.The groundwater levels in Dindigul district have dropped significantly. Around 70 water tanks have completely dried up across the district and there was no water for drinking or agricultural purposes, the farmers said.
