Samsung is launching a new foldable and it could reveal Apple's plans for this year's iPhone.14:06, 22 Jul 2026Samsung has finally unveiled its next generation of clever foldable phones, and it could be just what Apple didn't want to see.‌The Korean tech giant has announced three new devices, headlined by the all-new Galaxy Z Fold 8, which arrives with a completely redesigned look.‌Unlike previous Fold models, which have a tall cover screen and square main panel, Samsung has adopted a shorter, wider "passport-style" design. It may seem unusual when closed, but unfold it, and the new shape makes perfect sense.‌Inside is a wide 7.6-inch display that feels much more like a compact tablet than a smartphone, making it ideal for streaming movies, bingeing box sets and gaming on the go.The launch is particularly significant because Apple is widely expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone later this year, with reports suggesting it will also opt for this radical new look. If those rumours prove accurate, Samsung has already stolen a march on its biggest rival.And it's not just the design where Samsung is pushing ahead.‌The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the company's thinnest and lightest Fold yet, tipping the scales at just 180g. It also features an improved hinge for greater durability and a lower risk of breaking over time.Once opened, the bigger display gains Vision Booster technology and an anti-reflective coating to improve visibility in bright sunshine.‌Power comes from Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, backed by a 4,800mAh battery that can be charged from empty to 63 per cent in just 30 minutes.A dual-camera system offers a decent level of photography, while Gorilla Glass helps protect against scratches and accidental knocks.Samsung has also packed in its latest Galaxy AI tools, offering smarter photo editing, productivity features and improved search capabilities.‌The Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts from £1,699 and is available to pre-order now. By comparison, Apple's rumoured foldable iPhone isn't expected until later this year and could reportedly cost more than £2,000.The Fold 8 isn't the only new device.Samsung has also launched a Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which looks very similar to last year's Fold 7.‌However, don't be fooled. While the design remains familiar, it receives a boost via the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip along with a major camera upgrade. The rear system now features a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens and a 10MP telephoto camera, with Samsung promising dramatically improved low-light photography and 8K video recording.The Fold 8 Ultra also adopts the new Flex Titanium hinge and a redesigned display structure that's both stronger and more refined. Samsung says the notorious crease has been reduced, while a new opening mechanism makes unfolding the device smoother and more natural.A larger 5,000mAh battery promises all-day power and can reach 67 per cent charge in around 30 minutes.‌The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra starts from £1,899.Rounding out the line-up is the Galaxy Z Flip 8, which sticks with Samsung's popular clamshell design but becomes thinner and lighter than ever.Samsung has also improved the external cover display along with offering other upgrades such as a stronger aluminium hinge, faster performance and enhanced camera features.Article continues belowThe Galaxy Z Flip 8 starts from £1,149.
