Ask most marketers how artificial intelligence (AI) is changing creative work and the answer tends to be the same: faster, cheaper and more of it. Generate a hundred ad variants before lunch. Spin up a script, a voiceover and a dozen thumbnails in minutes. According to Wolfgang Digital – the Dublin-based, employee-owned agency – that instinct is largely the wrong one.“There’s a reflex right now to point AI at production, and it solves a problem most brands don’t really have,” says Róisín Linnie, head of social and creative at Wolfgang Digital. “The world isn’t short of content; audiences are drowning in it. What’s scarce is attention and you don’t win attention with volume. A thousand forgettable ads are still a thousand forgettable ads.”The agency specialises in performance marketing, but its answer to where AI genuinely outperforms humans is deliberately narrow: understanding what audiences actually think and judging honestly what’s working.“AI isn’t better than a talented team at having an idea,” Linnie says. “But it is dramatically better than any of us at two things humans find slow, tedious and emotionally biased: understanding what an audience actually thinks and evaluating without ego what’s working. Those two things are where creative is won or lost.”The first has reshaped the agency’s strategy. For decades, campaigns were informed by research decks, a media plan and instinct. Today the raw material is everywhere: in how people talk about a category on Reddit, the language in reviews and the themes that come up in comments across social. The volume is too large for any human to process. AI can. That’s where Pulse comes in. As Wolfgang Digital’s new intelligence engine, it mines customer conversations across channels to surface what audiences genuinely care about, expressed in their own words. The output isn’t a trend report. It’s the foundation for a creative strategy grounded in evidence rather than a hunch. As Linnie puts it: “The single biggest predictor of whether creative performs isn’t production value. It’s relevance – whether it speaks to something the audience actually feels.”The second capability is harder: honest evaluation. ‘AI’s real gift to creative isn’t speed. It’s clarity’— Róisín Linnie, head of social and creative at Wolfgang Digital“Every creative team – mine included – falls a little in love with its own work,” she says. “We remember the ad we were proud of, not the one that quietly outperformed it. Last-click reporting only flatters those biases.”That’s where Signal comes in, a reporting tool designed to monitor creative in-market continuously, testing messaging and formats against one another and surfacing what drives results asset by asset, while a campaign is still live. At this year’s Global Social Media Awards, Wolfgang Digital won best use of AI in social media and best use of research & evaluation for Reddit & Weep, a campaign built on precisely this approach. The wins across very different brands – Brown Thomas, GoCar and Intersport Elverys – underline the point.“As generative tools make content cheap to produce,” says Brendan Almack, managing director, “the competitive edge stops being who can make the most. It becomes who understands their audience best and who is honest about their results. That’s a harder discipline. But it’s the one that actually wins.”For Linnie, it’s simpler still: “AI’s real gift to creative isn’t speed. It’s clarity. And clarity has always been the rarest thing in marketing.”
