Chelsea just made Morgan Rogers the most expensive British footballer ever. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder moves from Aston Villa for £117 million, roughly $157 million, on a six-year deal with an option for a seventh. That’s a lot of zeros for a player who was at Manchester City’s academy not long ago.

The fee edges past the previous British-player record of £116 million, which Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson. By a single million pounds, Rogers now sits alone at the top of that particular leaderboard.

What Chelsea is actually buying

Rogers wasn’t some speculative punt. He was a core part of an Aston Villa side that qualified for the Champions League and won the Europa League during the 2025-26 season.

The verbal agreement reportedly came together earlier in the week, followed by a completed medical before the formal announcement on July 21, 2026. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso now has to figure out how to integrate a £117 million talent into a squad that already has plenty of expensive parts.
