Chelsea just signed England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million, making him the most expensive British footballer ever. The deal, confirmed on July 21, 2026, hands the 23-year-old attacking midfielder a six-year contract running through June 2032 with an option for an additional year. Rogers was in the middle of representing England at the 2026 World Cup when the verbal agreement landed.
The numbers behind the record
That £117 million fee doesn’t just set a British transfer record. It dwarfs the £8 million Aston Villa paid Middlesbrough for Rogers back in 2024, representing roughly a 14x return in just two years.
Middlesbrough won’t be left empty-handed either. A sell-on clause entitles Rogers’ former club to approximately £20.3 million from the deal.
Rogers earned the price tag. He was named UEFA Player of the Season in the Europa League during the 2025/26 campaign. Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso is expected to slot him into the squad immediately.
