The businessman has been formally charged in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court.
A businessman has been charged with attempted murder in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court after an off-duty police officer was shot at a traditional ceremony.
The Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Welile Matyolo, said the incident took place at a traditional ceremony on Saturday, July 18.
“A case of attempted murder was opened at Mthatha Central Police Station after a 60-year-old Mthatha businessman was arrested on Saturday, at about 11pm. It is alleged that he discharged a firearm inside a tent and hit an off-duty female police official based at Mthatha during a traditional ceremony held at Mazizini locality, Zimbane A/A, in Mthatha on the day,” Matyolo said.
Police said the businessman handed himself over to the Mthatha police and his licensed firearm was confiscated for further investigation.
