Police at the Constantia property where the rooftop of a heritage cottage, pictured in the background, was removed. The occupants of the cottage claim to have ancestral rights to the land and were granted a court interdict against their eviction.
A family who successfully secured their place on ancestral land in Constantia following a temporary interdict granted in their favour said they will be pursuing the violation of a National Heritage Site after one of the cottages on the property was torn down.
The family and its representative, Subeiga Benjamin, were Monday joined by human rights defender Tauriq Jenkins and GOOD Party councillor Suzette Little at the property after the rooftop of the heritage cottage at 2133 Pagasvlei Farm in Constantia was removed.
The rooftop was removed just days after the Wynberg Magistrate's Court granted Benjamin - a representative of the Matthews and Thebus family, a temporary interdict to return to the property.
Police were also called to the property on Monday, which is part of various ERFs with historical cottages on it, which are recognised by Heritage Western Cape as they are over 60 years old.
