Until Hugo Broos arrived to helm Bafana Bafana, national coaches tended to come and go with alarming frequency. However, one thing at the South African Football Association (Safa) has remained constant over the last 13 years: Danny Jordaan holding the reins as president of the footballing body.
Despite his arrest in November 2024 on criminal charges alleging the misuse of approximately R1.3 million in Safa funds, Jordaan has maintained his grip on power. Now, prominent businessman and AmaZulu FC chairman Sandile Zungu has thrown his hat into the ring for the Safa presidency. Nominations for the upcoming Safa elections opened on June 13 and are set to close on July 29.
"I would not say much about any candidate at this point, and I'm not even tempted to comment on any individual," Safa vice-president Linda Zwane told SportsBoom.co.za in an exclusive interview. "If he feels he can run against President Jordaan, then let him go ahead—it is a democracy.
"What we want is a united Safa, and that remains our main interest. Any person who wants to run is free to do so, and ultimately the regions will decide.”
