There is a growing sense within South African football that the time for renewal at Safa has arrived.
In that conversation, the emergence of businessman and AmaZulu owner Sandile Zungu as a possible presidential candidate has generated understandable interest. While he may not yet possess decades of football administration experience, he could still represent exactly the kind of strategic leadership SAFA desperately needs — provided he surrounds himself with the right football minds.
Zungu’s critics will rightly point out that he has only been directly involved in football administration for just over five years through AmaZulu FC. Safa, however, does not necessarily need another traditional football politician.
It needs a leader capable of restoring credibility, attracting investment, modernising governance and building sustainable commercial structures around the game. Those are areas where Zungu’s business pedigree becomes significant.
