The Madlanga Commission has heard allegations that the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption exceeded its legal mandate by pursuing investigations, arrests and court action against senior SAPS leaders, intensifying scrutiny of the unit's powers and oversight.
The Madlanga Commission has heard evidence suggesting that the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) was used to target senior South African Police Services (SAPS) leadership through unexplained probes, arrests and court action.
Last week, commissioners examined allegations that IDAC, led by Advocate Andrea Johnson, overstepped its anti-corruption mandate by intervening in SAPS recruitment processes.
This led to the unit pursuing criminal charges against senior officers and scrutinising internal policing decisions that critics argued fell outside its legal authority.
At the centre of the dispute was IDAC's investigation into appointments within the Crime Intelligence division.
